The Male Rules pt. 2

February 24th, 2009 by Anju

Thanks Anju for that very funny topic! I especially enjoyed the items which concerned being able to read women’s minds. I’ve noted a number of times when a girlfriend has been upset by something I’ve done, or even more often, by something I haven’t done. I know something’s wrong, but can’t get an answer about what is upsetting.

It seems there are some innate patterns to how men and women think, and thus how we communicate. Men hate when women talk during the game they’re watching on tv. Yet men are constantly talking to each other during a game! It doesn’t make sense, right?

But there can be a huge difference between the conversations. Men toss out statements during a game, about the game or some related topic, which are then reacted to. Women may ask questions or may want to more fully engage in a topic, asking questions while the game is on. Which pulls away from watching the game, and leading to a sarcastic answer to return back to the game.

(It’s interesting to me how intently I’ll be watching a basketball game, and a girlfriend will begin a totally unrelated conversation while I”m watching, and feel neglected if I’m not very intent on the topic. But if I want to begin a conversation while a wedding show or fashion show is on, I get shushed, and glared at if I keep talking!)

When interests are similar, these conflicts are usually minimal. But when one of us is bored, and the other is intensely involved, then someone’s going away angry!

And that’s why men shop for sofas. Between time spent watching sports on the couch, and the time spent sleeping on the couch later, men want the most comfort possible!
