Arranged relationship?
March 25th, 2009 by Anju
There’s a new trend in relationships, that borrows from one of the oldest ideas: arranged relationships/marriages. Some people have decided to take advantage of having someone else make the decision of who to be with. In the Western culture I live in, this idea is almost heretical because it is the opposite of championing individuality. However, it seems that more and more people here in the US are looking for arrangements.
Why the movement to this? One possibility might be the desire to find someone who is a good provider, especially in a weak economy. Another idea seems that people in our generation continue to struggle to find success in relationships and marriage, and as a result have decided that maybe someone else can do a better job than they have!
I myself struggle to understand the interest in arranged relationships. I would struggle to believe that someone else can know who I should be with better than me. However, as someone who’s been divorced and is currently single, I can’t necessarily say I am an expert in what makes a good partner for me either. So while I would initially be hesitant to employ someone to find me a mate, I have to admit I am intrigued by what the results of such a search would be!
